SCVAC Track & Field meeting Norman Park Friday 7th June 2013

The sun was shining for a change, but the cold winds which had been around for the previous few days were still in evidence, making the BVAC gazebo which Joan had kindly brought along a welcome haven for both spectators and competitors in between events.

It was great to have 2 full teams once again, although with Anne representing the club at discus throw, it was definitely a case of making up the numbers rather than any higher aspiration! (Maybe next time I’ll get it as far as the grass!)  The teams were boosted by track “virgins”, Peter Howe in the M50 100m, and Ian Chapman with an impressive 14.9 in the M35 B string 100m as well as helping to secure 2nd place in the relay. For the women’s team first-timers at T & F were Paula Chapman, in the M35 100m and the relay, and Fiona Hemsley who ran an impressively stylish 2nd leg in the relay.  We were once more indebted to Barbara Baker and Janette Burnard, who have both taken part in all 3 meetings so far and in several events at each meeting. Kish Hyde in the long jump and Bernie Fry in the discus were also making their 2nd appearance for BVAC in this season’s T & F.

There was plenty of excitement during the evening, with Ray Chapman nailing 1st place in the M50  800m in a time of 2.31.6 and Phil Greenfield taking the laurels in the M50 discus with a throw of 25.13. An eventful end to the M35  800m saw Gavin Kitchingham just pipped at the post by less than 1 second by Nigel Rumsey of Medway & Maidstone.  A storming finish in the men’s relay saw Gavin bringing the BVAC team home, just keeping far enough ahead of the Bexley finisher to finish in 2nd place behind Medway & Maidstone. In an equally exciting race, Chris Marshall took 2nd place in the M60 100m.  Marcus Elwes made his debut in the discus, securing another 3 points for the team; Marcus was busy on the track too, with appearances in both the 800m and the relay.  The team was completed by Tony Unseld, who secured 3rd place in both the M50 long jump and the M60 discus.
